Description District Post PM type 31 (JC) type 28 (RF) latticed diamond, with or without numerals no clearly defined inset - making them sometimes difficult to discern.
Those without numerals are thought experimental, and those with in use in the Madras postal sub-region, with notable examples in the Tanjore district, accompanied with Talook Tapal marks. Cooper notes their usage 1855-1869, and he lists only a few PO numbers: 26 Coompta (Kumta KA), 31 Waltair (Vizagapatam AP), 148 Mayaveram (Tanjore), 150 Nagapatam (Tanjore). Renouf (1951) notes active between 1863-70, and Martin indicates number 31 as earliest recorded June 1863 possibly leaning on Renoufs notes. Probably the 1855 Cooper instance is in question?! Examples are considered very scarce.
These same numbers are found in this collection. Be warned some printed notes on album pages seem incorrect or confused. An example in this collection without numeral dates to 29th July 1862 Ludhiana This Die II example (13)8 on post 1873 issued stamp makes it very late usage, perhaps latest recorded! Single examples seem mainly on DLR issues of 1855-65, one lithographic example.
Description District Post PM type 31a (JC) type 30 (JC-RF) rectangular design filled with thin horizontal lines with two insets Upper line DT = POST lower line format AR = 3, although often this lower part is undiscernible. Example Su = Surat, and probably number refers to sub-office of that district.
Apparently a very short-lived PM (Cooper), Martin notes (p.112) usage between 1868-1874 (as noted by Renouf 1951), and notes 8 districts all seem in western Maharashtra and South-east or central Gujarat.
These four identifications seem to marry by date to the exact instances found in this collection the earliest being 9th October 1868 (faint impression) latest Burwala July 1874. Examples are considered very rare - making the 8 examples from this collection extremely rare! AIA still holds two such examples!
Description PM type 31b (JC) type 36 (RF) intricate solid looking diamond with un-inked insets creating two outer bar lines small inner solid diamond small blank circular at centre.
Renouf notes usage example of 1856. Cooper thought the dozen examples on cover emanated from Bhavnagar Kathiawar GU, and thought them maybe a Kathiawar District PM?! Considered Extremely rare.
