India’s Bi-coloured Four Annas 1854 - A Specialised Study of Third Printing

Author D. N. Jatia - Published by Philatelic Congress of India, 2000, 69 pages and 24 colour plates, hardbound with dust jacket. This important work is the most significant publication on the early Indian lithograph issues since at least 1975. It is written in a modern concise language, and gives an updated more generalised overview of all aspects of the four anna, with clear explanatory diagrams throughout. Better than previously attempted, it helps identify the various blue head dies found on this value, as well as watermark diagrams overlaid with wide, close, and medium spacing’s in every sheet orientation encountered. The final section has decent quality colour plates for a printed version, showing many of the finest examples extant.

The most significant contribution of this wonderful publication to Indian philately, lies in the complex third printings, and plating the frame flaws into about 20 stones, each with various pictorial plating diagrams, showing on each of the 12 sheet positions, the now established stones, plus additional confirmed and unconfirmed plating flaws. The original work on the subject published in 1930 by Smythies & Martin consisted of 272 stamps depicting 79 confirmed flaws, later slightly updated in 1949-51 to 109 sets of flaws. This Jatia study expanded this research to about 600 stamps with 224 identified sets of flaws, connecting to 127 stones, 65 confirmed individuals and 32 unconfirmed flaws! The numbers alone indicate the significance of this book. Jatia in his modernised methodology also embraces digitised images with plating overlays, to enhance the technique of plating, and move a world away from the original foundation study. A ‘must have’ publication for anyone seriously interested in early lithograph issues of any value!
